The General Assembly made changes to the school council law. These changes go into effect as of July 1, 2007. The primary change is in the composition of the council. The majority of members must now be parent members and the chairperson must be a parent member. The change in membership applies to elections occurring after July 1, 2007 as terms expire. The General Assembly also added to the responsibilities of the school council in two areas. Senate Bill 123 provides flexibility for high school class sizes, grades 9-12. A local board of education may choose to exceed the funding class size (23) by 39%, resulting in a maximum class size of 32. School councils must be informed if this flexibility option is utilized. Senate Bill 72 allows local boards to use school administrators in addition or instead of assistant principals. School councils must be involved in the decision to employ school administrators. The Georgia School Council Institute will be updating its training materials to reflect these recent changes. The updated material should be available by June 30.
